Behind the Scenes with Ella Broome

Marjanah / Kitty Reidy of Chu Chin Chow

Tell me about your character in Chu Chin Chow. What do you think of her?
Marjanah is a strong-willed, loving woman. She believes in pure love and stands for what is right. I think I can relate to her because I believe in those things too.

How is this show different from others you’ve appeared in?
Chu Chin Chow is different from other shows I have appeared in because it somewhat depicts a story within a story. Also, out of all the productions I have been in, I have only played exaggerated character roles.

What has been your biggest challenge about taking on this role?
The challenge in this role is to go from typically playing larger than life characters to playing a subtle, adored beautiful woman. It’s very foreign to me, but I am enjoying the change.

What celebrity would you like to see tackle this character? Extra props for an Aussie connection!
The celebrity I would like to see take on this role is German Opera superstar Diana Damrau. She is a wonderful soprano and her resonate, full voice would suit the character Marjanah perfectly.

Which is your favourite song from Chu Chin Chow, and why do you think the audience will like it?
My favourite song from Chu Chin Chow is one of my arias “I Built A Fairy Palace In The Sky”. It creates beautiful musical imagery and is very enjoyable to sing.

Tell us about your first stage show and what you learned from the experience?
I was in the chorus as a street urchin in the musical Sweeney Todd when I was 13, performing with Townsville Grammar School back in Queensland. I learnt that a lot of hard work and effort goes on behind the scenes of a show.

Do you have a favourite play or musical, and if so, why do you love it?
My favourite musical would have to be West Side Story, I love the contemporary cross-cultural take on the classic love story of Romeo and Juliet. Oh, and the music is divine.

What role would you love to play that you haven’t had a chance to as yet?
I would love to play is either Mrs Lovett from Sweeney Todd or Lucia from Lucia Di Lamermoor.

What does your perfect Sunday afternoon look like?
Drinking a Chai Latte and sun bathing on a hot beach.

Is there someone you look up to professionally (as an actor/director/etc.) or personally?
The absolutely flawless and breathtaking Coloratura Soprano Angela Gheorghiu. Her voice mesmerizes me.

What’s the last thing you do before you step out on stage / the curtain goes up?
I try to center myself and say a short prayer in my mind. It works wonders.
