Welcome to the

Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Victoria

and

Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Victoria

Archive.

The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Victoria's on-line archive is a valuable resource for Society members, researchers, performers and casual browsers. It has information about all of the shows performed by the Society over its extensive history, including lists of cast and crew, photographs and other material.

The archive is searchable by year and show name via the menu. Users can also use the search facility to look up dates, names appearing on cast lists, show names.

Some of the highlights of the archive are:

  • Cast lists going back to the early years of the 1930s.
  • Lists of cast, crew and in some cases orchestras from the 1980s onwards.
  • Playbills from most shows from the 1990s on, and some even earlier than that.
  • Photographs of many shows from the past.

This is an on-going project. It is not static, and will never be 100% completed. There is much to add - more photos, additional cast/chorus/orchestra members, playbills, complete programmes, and future shows.

Future focus for the archive include:

  • An ability to search the archive for casts, crews and orchestras for every show we have a programme for.
  • Scanned copies of the Society magazine The Palace Peeper.
  • Sound files and video clips from shows.
  • Articles and reviews.
This online archive is distinct from the Society's library. Information about the Society's library and the Bruce Doery collection is available elsewhere on gsov.org.au.

History:

GSOV Online Archive V1.0

The Society's online archiive exists due to the initial work done by Diana (Hatch) Faizoulline and Alex Scutt. Diana scoured the Society's collections for information about old cast lists and photographs. As a regular performer with the Society over many years, she has contributed a lot of the information from her own extensive collection of old programmes and other memorabilia. Alex Scutt, oversaw the process of transferring a huge amount of this material into the online database.

GSOV Online Archive V2.0

The Society's webmaster is now Andrew McGrail, who has overseen the process of rebuilding every page, and transferring a huge amount of this material into the new online database through which you are now browsing.
