The Gondoliers was Gilbert and Sullivan's last major success. Set in picturesque Venice in the late 19th century and the island of Barataria, it tells the topsy-turvy tale of the young Prince of Barataria being left in the foster care of a gondolier who mixes him up with his own son. The boys grow up as happy gondoliers and take a pretty wife each before they are told that one of them is now the King. Confusion follows when it is revealed that the Prince was already married in infancy! This is Sullivan's sunniest music, and Gilbert created a wealth of funny and original characters.
