An opportunity to get familiar with Trial by Jury

Tuesday March 25th is the 150th anniversary of the premiere of Trial By Jury, when Gilbert & Sullivan began their 20-year creative collaboration. So let’s gather at St Luke’s Mount Waverley for some social, scholarly fun, and get you all singing Trial together.

JUBILEE

An exciting chance to be part of our big celebration.

The Gilbert and Sullivan collaboration began 150 years ago and the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Victoria was founded 90 years ago.

In October we will celebrate both anniversaries in a production we are calling Jubilee. It will be in the Athenaeum II theatre (our first time in the city for many years).

We are seeking a large cast to bring to life the history of G&S in Victoria over that time. We require singers and actors. There will be a lot of chorus work but also a number of solos and concerted numbers. We will begin with a performance of Trial by Jury and that will be followed by a production which encompasses the introduction of G&S to Victoria and showcases the life of our company.

We also need 3 actors to portray W.S. Gilbert (he was tall with a military bearing), Sullivan (short and tubby) and Richard D’Oyly Carte (genial Victorian with a beard).

 

2025 PERFORMANCE DATES

Season details are posted on the Jubilee webpage. The performance dates are October 16th-19th.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals will commence in early August.

Costs:

Please be advised that all performers will be required to contribute a show fee of $80 full or $60 concession, to help contribute to rehearsal costs. All performers must be GSOV members; those not already a member will also have to pay the $20 GSOV membership fee. Information on when and how to pay will be sent to successful auditionees.

Vocal scores may be borrowed from the GSOV library by arrangement.

You may prepare any suitable song that shows your vocal style and quality but you must bring a copy of the music for our accompanist. No pre-recorded audio backing tracks please. However, being familiar with the suggested musical selections is encouraged as we may also wish you to sing a short section. Vocal scores for the full G&S canon will be available for use at the audition.

If you would like to be part of the ensemble please prepare any piece from G&S which shows off your vocal range. However if you are known to either the Director or MD you are encouraged to audition (because it is good to do), but it is not required. Please fill out the audition form to register your interest in being an ensemble member.

Learned Judge: Patter/Character, No. 4 p18-19 (2 verses)
Defendant: Tenor, No. 2 p11-12 (2 verses)
Council: Baritone, No. 8 p30-32 from start
Usher: Bass, No. 1 p6-8 from “Now Jurymen hear my advice”
Foreman: Mid-Baritone, any baritone song from G&S repertoire
Plaintiff: Soprano, No. 6 p26 from “Comes the broken flower”
Bridesmaid: Soprano, No. 6 p25 from “O’er the season vernal”

CONCERT PARTY

GSOV has a long history of providing entertainment and fundraising with its Concert Party presentations.

New members are invited to audition for some exciting performance projects including additional Trial by Jury presentations. Please prepare any piece from G&S which shows off your vocal range.
