Libretto by W.S.GILBERT
Music by FREDERIC CLAY

Glen Cockaleekie Castle is deserted, but every 100 years a new rightful owner is found when the portraits of the past owners of the castle come to life and step out their frames

Before William met Arthur, Gilbert wrote some charming operettas for The Royal Gallery of Illustration with Frederic Clay. “Ages Ago” was the most successful of these with its original London production run of 350 performances. The London Penny Illustrated Paper (1869) hailed it

A very brilliant, sparkling operetta, full of ingenious fun in the plot and dialogue, and exhibiting a good deal of grace and freshness in the music. The dialogue is smart as well as polished, and contains several hits on current town topics, not one of which misses fire.

There were revivals throughout the Victorian era and New York’s Broadway Opera House re-opened with “Ages Ago” in 1880.

It was at a rehearsal of that Gilbert and Sullivan first met with Gilbert using many of his original ideas from “Ages Ago” in his later operas with Sullivan, including the ghostly “Ruddigore”.

This is a GSOV premiere and has been lovingly researched and revived by DIANA BURLEIGH and GEOFFREY URQUHART.
